Ask where British businesses are being created, and most people say London. They are right. It is the least interesting part of the answer.

London opened twelve point seven per cent of its businesses in 2024, the highest rate in the country. The North West and the West Midlands came next.

But openings on their own tell you very little. Northern Ireland closed only seven point three per cent of its businesses, the lowest rate in the UK. Its firms stay put.

And survival points somewhere else again. The South West kept forty three point five per cent of the businesses it started in 2019. The West Midlands, which opens plenty, kept thirty point six.
