    423,000 active businesses. Opening at 10.6 per cent, closing at 8.8. More arrived than left, and the closing rate sits below the national average of 9.8.

    Compare that with transport and storage, which closed 16.5 per cent that year. Construction sits nearer the calm end than most people expect.

    But it is not one market. Division 41 is building. 42 is civil engineering, fewer firms and much bigger contracts. 43 is the specialist trades, and that is where most of the firms are.
