Activities of membership organisations (SIC division 94)
Division 94 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 4 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 94
Division 94 is largely non-commercial. Trade associations and employer bodies register under 94110. Professional membership organisations use 94120. Religious organisations use 94910. Code 94990 collects other membership bodies, from residents' associations to hobby clubs and campaigning groups. Most entries are companies limited by guarantee, and many hold charitable status. Boards and volunteers run them, not owner-managers. That structure shapes how they operate, how they spend and how they answer approaches. It sets them apart from the trading companies elsewhere on the public record.
These organisations do buy, just differently. They need membership management and CRM platforms, event and conference services, insurance for premises and trustees, accountancy that understands charity reporting, and venue hire. Suppliers also use these codes the other way round. A trade body's member directory and sponsorship inventory is a route into a whole industry. Decisions here go through committees and AGMs, so patience beats urgency. A new incorporation often follows a community campaign, or a professional group formalising itself. Governance and banking services are both needed at that point.
How to read a division 94 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 94 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 94 shares those digits: all 4 codes below begin 94, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 94 sits inside section S, other service activities, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 94 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 94990, activities of other membership organisations n.e.c..
Working division 94 as a list
Division 94 holds 4 codes and 27,994 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 94990 accounts for 50 per cent on its own, and the top three take 88 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 1 code. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 94990 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.
More on working division 94
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 94 questions
Can a company limited by guarantee choose any SIC code?
Yes. The SIC rules are the same for every company type. Codes are self-declared at incorporation, changeable on the confirmation statement (CS01), capped at 4 per company, and never vetted by Companies House. Guarantee companies simply tend to pick division 94 codes, because membership activity describes them best. Charitable status, where held, comes from the Charity Commission or OSCR. It has nothing to do with the SIC code.
Which SIC code fits a community group or club?
Use 94990, activities of other membership organisations n.e.c. It is the usual home for incorporated clubs, societies and community associations that are not professional, business or religious bodies. Sports clubs may prefer 93120 in the recreation division. Either way the choice is free and needs no approval. A club with both membership and facility activities can list codes from both divisions, up to 4 in total.
