Human health activities (SIC division 86)
Division 86 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 6 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 86
Human health activities is broader than it looks. Its largest code is 86900, other human health. Physiotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, podiatrists, aesthetic clinics and a long tail of allied health practitioners all register there. It is far more mixed than the medical codes beside it. GPs incorporate under 86210. Hospital consultants and private specialists use 86220. Dental practices use 86230. Hospitals and medical nursing homes use 86101 and 86102. Many entries are personal service companies for one clinician doing private or locum work, not clinics with premises.
Medical accountancy is a real specialism. Those firms watch new 86210 and 86220 incorporations, which usually mean a doctor is starting private practice. Indemnity insurers follow the same trail, along with private hospital groups offering practising privileges, medical billing services and clinic management software vendors. Dental practices attract equipment suppliers, practice sales brokers and compliance consultants. Inside 86900, split by subspecialty before you send anything. A counselling practice and an aesthetics clinic share a code and nothing else. CQC status is the other divider. It separates regulated providers from wellness businesses.
How to read a division 86 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 86 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 86 shares those digits: all 6 codes below begin 86, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 86 sits inside section Q, human health and social work, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 86 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 86900, other human health activities.
Working division 86 as a list
Division 86 holds 6 codes and 198,980 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 86900 accounts for 51 per cent on its own, and the top three take 81 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 3 codes. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 86900 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.
More on working division 86
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 86 questions
Does a healthcare SIC code mean the company is CQC registered?
No. Directors declare SIC codes and nobody verifies them. CQC registration in England is needed only when a provider carries on regulated activities, such as surgical or diagnostic procedures. The same applies to the equivalent regulators elsewhere in the UK. Plenty of 86900 companies, including coaches, therapists and wellness practitioners, sit outside CQC scope quite legitimately. Check the regulator's register directly when compliance status matters.
Which SIC code should a locum doctor's limited company use?
Locum GPs normally use 86210. Hospital specialists use 86220. Both match the setting they work in. Allied health professionals default to 86900. Companies House runs no approval process. You select codes at incorporation and can amend them on the confirmation statement (CS01). A clinician mixing NHS locum work with a private clinic can hold several codes, up to the limit of 4.
