What sits in division 82
Without 82990 this division would be small. That code, other business support n.e.c., is what companies in every industry pick when nothing else describes them. So a list built on 82990 alone is noisy. It holds virtual assistants, consultants, agencies and plain misclassifications side by side. The specific codes are much cleaner. Code 82110 covers combined office administrative services. Code 82301 is for exhibition and fair organisers, and 82302 for conference organisers. Code 82920 covers the packaging and fulfilment trade that grew up with online retail.
Work the edges of this division, not the middle. Event organisers under 82301 and 82302 buy venues, AV production, registration platforms, sponsorship sales and event insurance. A new incorporation there often means an events director has gone independent. Not legally. Code 82990 is valid and Companies House never queries the choice. The downside is visibility. Directories, lenders and data platforms cannot tell what you do from a catch-all entry. If a better code exists for your trade, swap it in on your next confirmation statement (CS01). You can hold up to 4 codes, so you can keep 82990 alongside it.
What SIC code should a virtual assistant business use?
Most VAs choose 82110, combined office administrative services. Others use the broader 82990 when the work spans admin, inbox management and social media. Neither needs approval, and you can change the choice on any confirmation statement. If a big share of your work is specialised, such as bookkeeping under 69202, list that code too.
