UK SIC 2007 · Division 80

Security and investigation activities (SIC division 80)

Division 80 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 3 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.

Sector context

What sits in division 80

Division 80 holds two very different populations. Code 80100, private security activities, covers manned guarding, door supervision and close protection. It is a labour-heavy trade where contracts and licensed staff are the whole business. Code 80200 covers security systems services. Those firms install and monitor alarms, CCTV and access control, and they behave more like specialist electrical contractors. The two buy in completely different ways, so they should rarely get the same emails. Both groups contain many small subcontractors built around one client.

Guarding firms under 80100 attract workforce management software vendors, payroll and invoice finance providers, and insurers. SIA licensing consultants chase new incorporations before the first contract lands. Systems installers under 80200 draw a different set: wholesale equipment distributors, monitoring station partners, and the accreditation bodies whose inspectorate badges unlock commercial work. In both camps a big contract win forces sudden hiring or stock buying. So visible growth is the strongest buying signal here. Filing deadlines point to thinly-run firms that need back-office help.

Anatomy

How to read a division 80 code

A UK SIC code is five digits and division 80 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 80 shares those digits: all 3 codes below begin 80, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 80 sits inside section N, administrative and support service activities, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

More on how division 80 codes are built

Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 80100, private security activities.

Targeting

Working division 80 as a list

Division 80 holds 3 codes and 26,356 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 80100 accounts for 55 per cent on its own, and the other 2 codes account for the rest. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 80100 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.

More on working division 80

A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Questions

Division 80 questions

Does registering a security SIC code mean the company holds SIA licences?

No. SIC codes are self-declared at Companies House and nobody vets them. Security Industry Authority licensing applies to individuals doing licensable roles, such as guarding and door supervision. The voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme applies to businesses. A company can sit under 80100 and hold no licences at all. Check SIA status separately from the public record.

Which SIC code should a CCTV and alarm installation business use?

Use 80200, security systems service activities. It is the standard fit for installing and monitoring alarms, CCTV and access control. Some installers also register an electrical installation code from division 43. Companies House permits that, since each company may hold up to 4 codes. Set codes at incorporation and change them on the confirmation statement (CS01). No approval is needed either way.
