Activities auxiliary to financial services and insurance activities (SIC division 66)
Division 66 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 7 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 66
This division gathers the middlemen of financial services. Insurance agents and brokers sit under 66220. Fund managers use 66300. Security and commodity dealing firms use 66120. A wide population of advisers and support businesses sits under 66190, which covers auxiliary financial intermediation not classified elsewhere. Many independent financial advisers and mortgage intermediaries pick 66190 or 66290. So the auxiliary codes are a mix. You get one-adviser practices, appointed representatives and back-office service firms, not one recognisable trade.
Plenty of suppliers work this water. They sell compliance support, professional indemnity cover, CRM and back-office platforms, paraplanning services and recruitment. Acquirers consolidating adviser books hunt here too. Three signals help. A brand new company often means an adviser has gone independent. A looming confirmation statement or accounts deadline hints at thin admin support. And the poor-website filter finds firms still trading on referrals, which makes them a strong fit for marketing services.
How to read a division 66 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 66 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 66 shares those digits: all 7 codes below begin 66, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 66 sits inside section K, financial and insurance activities, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 66 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 66190, activities auxiliary to financial intermediation n.e.c..
Working division 66 as a list
Division 66 holds 7 codes and 31,840 active companies between them. 66190 is the largest at 30 per cent and the top three take 73 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 4 codes. That is balanced enough that the division is a reasonable unit to work, though the leading code alone will usually give you a cleaner list.
More on working division 66
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 66 questions
Which SIC code do independent financial advisers normally use?
Most IFAs register 66190, activities auxiliary to financial intermediation n.e.c. Insurance-focused advisers often use 66220 or 66290 instead. There is no official mapping and no approval step. Directors choose their own codes at incorporation and can amend them on the next confirmation statement (CS01). A company may hold up to 4 codes, so many adviser firms list a financial code and an insurance code.
Does my SIC code affect FCA authorisation or permissions?
No. The FCA grants permissions on your application and the regulated activities you plan to carry on. What Companies House records has no bearing. Choosing a broking or fund management SIC code gives you no permission to trade. The two systems are separate. Data and compliance firms do cross-check the FCA register against SIC data to spot newly authorised businesses.
