Division 65 holds insurance and reinsurance carriers and pension funding vehicles. These firms carry the risk. They do not sell policies for someone else. Almost every visible UK entry sits under 65120, non-life insurance. That covers underwriters of motor, property, liability and specialist commercial lines. Brokers and intermediaries belong in division 66. Remember that when you build a list. A company classified here has chosen to call itself an insurer, not an adviser or an agent.
Selling into this division means selling to institutions, not small traders. Actuarial consultancies, claims technology vendors, compliance specialists, reinsurance intermediaries and specialist recruiters all target it. Does registering SIC code 65120 make my business an authorised insurer?
No. SIC codes are self-selected descriptions with no approval process. You pick them at incorporation, or update them on your confirmation statement (CS01). Companies House never vets the choice. Carrying on insurance business in the UK needs authorisation from the PRA and FCA. That is a separate regulatory application, and it has nothing to do with the code on the public register.
Should an insurance broker choose a division 65 SIC code?
Usually not. Division 65 is for carriers that underwrite risk. Agents and brokers fit 66220 in division 66. A company can list up to 4 SIC codes and change them at any time on its confirmation statement. So if you picked a carrier code by mistake, it is easy to correct. Fixing it also puts you on the right lists.
