What sits in division 64
The title sounds like banking. On the UK register, division 64 is really about corporate structure. Two codes carry most of it: 64209, activities of other holding companies, and 64999, financial intermediation not elsewhere classified. Holding companies also split by sector. Construction groups use 64203, financial services groups 64205, and production groups 64202. Real investment vehicles sit around them. Open-ended investment companies use 64304, investment trusts 64301, venture and development capital 64303, REITs 64306, security dealing 64991, and mortgage finance companies 64922.
Most of this division is holding companies and special purpose vehicles. So the natural sellers are advisers to corporate structures. Accountants and tax specialists pitch group relief and consolidation work. Corporate solicitors, company secretarial providers and wealth managers serve the families behind investment companies. Lenders and brokers watch the mortgage and intermediation codes for referral partners. A brand new holding company is a strong sign of a group reorganisation, an acquisition or a pre-sale restructure. Advisory fees get committed at that point. A looming confirmation statement or accounts deadline flags entities whose compliance is an afterthought.
How to read a division 64 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 64 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 64 shares those digits: all 18 codes below begin 64, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 64 sits inside section K, financial and insurance activities, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 64209, activities of other holding companies n.e.c..

Division 64 holds 18 codes and 202,696 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 64209 accounts for 58 per cent on its own, and the top three take 79 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 15 codes. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 64209 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.

Which SIC code should a holding company register?
Use 64209, activities of other holding companies n.e.c. It is the default and the most common choice. If the group has a clear sector, a specific variant describes it better. That means 64203 for construction, 64205 for financial services, or 64202 for production holding companies. The company picks its own code at incorporation or on a CS01. No approval is required.
Does registering a division 64 code mean my company needs FCA authorisation?
No. SIC codes are descriptive labels on the Companies House register. They carry no regulatory weight. FCA authorisation depends on the regulated activities you actually carry out, and that is assessed separately. Holding companies under 64209 usually need no authorisation at all. A firm doing real lending or dealing must consider FCA permissions whatever its code says.
