Division 41 is one of the most used classifications on the UK register. It splits three ways. Code 41100, development of building projects, is picked by developers and by companies set up to hold one scheme. Then come the two building codes. Code 41202 covers domestic construction, so house builders and residential contractors live there. Code 41201 covers commercial buildings. The developer code is popular partly because property investors use it for their ventures. So plenty of 41100 companies employ no tradespeople at all.

How to read a division 41 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 41 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 41 shares those digits: all 3 codes below begin 41, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 41 sits inside section F, construction, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

What is the difference between 41100 and the construction codes 41201 and 41202?
Code 41100 is for developing building projects. That means pulling together land, funding and consents, then subcontracting the build. Codes 41201 and 41202 are for physically constructing commercial and domestic buildings. A developer who also builds can list both. Small builders sometimes pick 41100 when 41202 fits better. The public record accepts either, but the right code helps insurers and lenders read the business correctly.
Should a builder change SIC code when moving from renovations to new builds?
Often not. Renovation, extension and refurbishment of houses sits under 41202, alongside new build domestic work. If your work is really one trade, a division 43 code may fit better than 41. Review your codes at each confirmation statement. No approval is needed, and it keeps the public record in line with what the business actually does.
