Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (SIC division 35)
Division 35 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 6 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 35
On paper this is the utilities sector. On the UK register it is mostly energy project vehicles. The busiest code is 35110, production of electricity. It is full of special purpose companies that hold one asset each: a solar farm, a wind turbine, a battery storage site or a hydro scheme. Lenders prefer them separated, so each asset gets its own company. Code 35140, trade of electricity, holds licensed suppliers and power purchase intermediaries. Gas, steam and air conditioning supply codes sit here as well, with far fewer companies.
So many entries are single-asset vehicles that professional services dominate the selling. Accountants and company secretarial providers run portfolios of these vehicles. Every new one incorporated is new work, and the flow tracks renewable development closely. Legal advisers, energy asset insurers, and operations and maintenance contractors watch the same formations. Watch for a cluster of new companies sharing directors or an address. That is a developer building out a pipeline. Approach the developer once, not vehicle by vehicle. Filing deadlines land across a whole portfolio at the same time, which suits compliance services.
How to read a division 35 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 35 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 35 shares those digits: all 6 codes below begin 35, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 35 sits inside section D, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 35 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 35110, production of electricity.
Working division 35 as a list
Division 35 holds 6 codes and 18,397 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 35110 accounts for 59 per cent on its own, and the top three take 84 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 3 codes. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 35110 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.
More on working division 35
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 35 questions
Which SIC code should a company set up to own a solar installation use?
Use 35110, production of electricity. It is the standard for generation assets of any type, including solar, wind, hydro and battery-backed generation. Companies that buy and resell power, rather than generate it, fit 35140. Developers sometimes add a construction or project development code during the build. The company chooses freely, and can revise codes on each confirmation statement as the project moves from build to operation.
Do all the SPVs in an energy portfolio need the same SIC code?
No rule says they must, but consistency helps. Each company declares its own codes at incorporation, and there is no group-level classification. Most developers standardise on 35110 for generation vehicles. Lenders, insurers and counterparties can then read the whole portfolio at a glance. If you buy a vehicle carrying an old code, align it on its next CS01 confirmation statement. No approval is involved.
