UK furniture manufacture splits across two main codes. The broad one is 31090, other furniture. It holds upholsterers, bespoke cabinet makers, sofa and bed producers, and contract furniture firms supplying offices and hotels. The other busy code is 31020, kitchen furniture. Division 31 sits inside section C, manufacturing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

Is a bespoke furniture maker 31090 or a joinery code?
Look at what you produce. If it is furniture, such as wardrobes, tables and cabinetry, fitted or freestanding, choose 31090. Use 31020 for kitchens. If you produce building components such as staircases, doors and windows, division 16 joinery manufacture fits better. Workshops doing both can list a code from each division. Classification is self-declared, so pick what matches your main income and refine it later.
Do kitchen manufacturers who also fit kitchens need a construction SIC code?
Adding one is sensible. Manufacture belongs under 31020. Fitting kitchens in customers' homes matches 43320, joinery installation. Listing both shows the real business to insurers and trade bodies who check the public record. A company may hold up to four SIC codes and mix divisions freely. Set them at incorporation or on any confirmation statement. Companies House does not scrutinise the combination.
