UK SIC 2007 · Division 16

Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials (SIC division 16)

Division 16 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 3 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.

Sector context

What sits in division 16

The official title is long, but in the UK this division is mostly joinery workshops. The main code is 16230, other builders' carpentry and joinery. Firms using it make staircases, doors, window frames, roof trusses and bespoke timber parts for the building trade. Sawmilling and timber treatment businesses also sit here, in much smaller numbers. One thing separates 16230 from the installation codes in division 43. It is the workshop. These companies make the product before anyone fits it.

Joinery manufacturers sell almost entirely into construction. So the people selling to them mirror the building supply chain: timber merchants, machinery dealers, CNC tooling suppliers and trade credit insurers. Builders and fit-out contractors use the same data the other way round, to find local workshops for bespoke jobs. A new incorporation often means an experienced joiner setting up alone. That is the moment for equipment finance and workshop insurance. Plenty of workshops win work by reputation and let their website slide. The poor-website filter turns that into a clear list.

Anatomy

How to read a division 16 code

A UK SIC code is five digits and division 16 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 16 shares those digits: all 3 codes below begin 16, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 16 sits inside section C, manufacturing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

More on how division 16 codes are built

Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 16230, manufacture of other builders' carpentry and joinery.

Targeting

Working division 16 as a list

Division 16 holds 3 codes and 10,719 active companies between them. One code carries most of it: 16230 accounts for 75 per cent on its own, and the other 2 codes account for the rest. Filtering by the whole division is therefore close to filtering by 16230 with a tail attached, so start from the code and widen only if the list runs dry.

More on working division 16

A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Questions

Division 16 questions

Should a joinery business choose 16230 or 43320?

Use 16230 if you make joinery in a workshop: staircases, doors, trusses and the like. That holds whether or not you fit them yourself. Use 43320, joinery installation, if your work is fitting products made by others on site. Firms that truly do both can list both codes. The split mainly affects how buyers and insurers read your company. Companies House never queries it.

How does a company change its SIC code if the business shifts from site work to manufacturing?

File your next confirmation statement (form CS01) with the new codes. The change shows on the public register once it is accepted. There is no separate application, no evidence to supply and no decision to wait for. You can add codes instead of replacing them, up to four in total. That suits a business moving between activities slowly.
