Manufacture of food products (SIC division 10)
Division 10 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 14 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 10
UK food manufacturing runs from big industrial processors down to one-person artisan producers. The codes show that spread. The catch-all 10890, other food products, takes in sauces, snacks and supplements with no code of their own. Bakeries making bread, cakes and fresh pastry use 10710. Many of these companies began on a market stall or a kitchen table. They incorporated once the first wholesale orders came in. So the division mixes long-running factories with very young food brands.
A growing food producer buys chilled and ambient distribution early. That makes this division a staple list for logistics and haulage firms chasing new accounts. Packaging suppliers, food safety consultants and commercial kitchen landlords work it too. Look for a recent incorporation with a retail-sounding name. That often means a brand about to hunt for stockists. It is the exact moment fulfilment and courier deals get agreed. The poor-website filter finds producers whose shop front lags the product. They are a warm audience for ecommerce and branding services.
How to read a division 10 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 10 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 10 shares those digits: all 14 codes below begin 10, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 10 sits inside section C, manufacturing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 10 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 10890, manufacture of other food products n.e.c..
Working division 10 as a list
Division 10 holds 14 codes and 22,684 active companies between them. 10890 is the largest at 28 per cent and the top three take 59 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 11 codes. That is balanced enough that the division is a reasonable unit to work, though the leading code alone will usually give you a cleaner list.
More on working division 10
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 10 questions
Should a bakery register under 10710 or a retail SIC code?
It depends on what the business mainly does. Bake for shops, cafes or wholesalers, and 10710 manufacturing is right. Run a shop selling what you bake on site, and a retail code from division 47 fits better. Plenty of bakeries list both. A company can hold up to four codes, and mixing manufacturing with retail is completely normal.
Does choosing a food manufacturing SIC code trigger hygiene inspections?
No. You must register your food business with the local authority whatever your SIC code says. That is a separate legal duty. Environmental health teams do not work from Companies House data. The SIC code only describes your activity on the public record. Keep it accurate anyway. Wholesale buyers and insurers sometimes check it before taking on a new supplier.
