What sits in division 02
Forestry and logging covers woodland work across the UK: growing it, managing it and harvesting it. Companies under 02100 do silviculture. That means planting, thinning and looking after tree stock. Much of it runs on long management contracts for estates or public bodies. Code 02400 covers the support contractors around them. Their work includes timber measurement, forest fire protection and hauling logs inside the forest. Registrations cluster in Scotland and the north of England, where the commercial plantations are. Most firms here are small and owner-run.
Specialist insurance brokers work this division hardest. Forestry carries chainsaw, plant and public liability risks. Generalist policies cover them badly. Equipment finance firms, safety training providers and accountants who know woodland tax also buy this data. A new incorporation usually means a contractor has left a job to go it alone. A UK SIC code is five digits and division 02 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 02 shares those digits: all 3 codes below begin 02, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 02 sits inside section A, agriculture, forestry and fishing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.

What is the difference between 02100 and 02400 for a forestry contractor?
Use 02100 silviculture if you grow and manage the trees yourself. Use 02400 for support work done in someone else's woodland. That covers harvesting support, fire protection and in-forest timber transport. If you do both, list both codes. The choice is yours. Companies House records what you declare and checks nothing.
Does my SIC code affect the licences a forestry business needs?
No. SIC codes are statistical labels, not permissions. You apply for felling licences separately, through Forestry England, Scottish Forestry or Natural Resources Wales. Your registered code has no bearing on them. Insurers and lenders do read your SIC code to judge risk. Keeping it accurate saves awkward questions at renewal or when you apply for finance.
