Crop and animal production, hunting and related service activities (SIC division 01)
Division 01 of the UK SIC 2007 list. It holds 17 codes, listed in full below with the number of active UK companies filed under each.
What sits in division 01
This division holds Britain's working farms. It covers arable growers, livestock keepers and the contractors who help them. Mixed farming, code 01500, is the most common choice. Family farms pick it when they run crops and animals together. Growers of cereals and oilseed use 01110 instead. Agricultural contractors sit in the support codes 01610 and 01629. That takes in crop spraying, livestock work and shearing. Many firms here are long-established partnerships. They only became limited companies in the last few years.
Accountants with farm clients watch this division. A farm that incorporates has usually just restructured. That brings steady compliance work, from payroll to capital allowances on machinery. Land agents, farm insurers and machinery dealers sell here too. A recent incorporation date is the strongest signal. It often marks a succession or a new diversification project. Farm websites are frequently years out of date. The poor-website filter finds those firms quickly, which suits web designers and rural marketing services. Filing deadlines give accountants a natural moment to get in touch.
How to read a division 01 code
A UK SIC code is five digits and division 01 is the first two of them. Everything filed under 01 shares those digits: all 17 codes below begin 01, then the third digit narrows to a group, the fourth to a class and the fifth to the subclass a company actually picks. Division 01 sits inside section A, agriculture, forestry and fishing, which is the broadest tier of the classification. So a code is read left to right, from an industry down to a specific activity.
More on how division 01 codes are built
Companies choose their own codes at incorporation and can change them on any confirmation statement, and Companies House does not check the answer. A company may list up to four. That is worth knowing before you treat any division total as a headcount: the numbers here are what companies said about themselves, on the August 2026 register, and the largest single code in this division is 01500, mixed farming.
Working division 01 as a list
Division 01 holds 17 codes and 35,251 active companies between them. 01500 is the largest at 27 per cent and the top three take 47 per cent, with the rest spread across the remaining 14 codes. That is balanced enough that the division is a reasonable unit to work, though the leading code alone will usually give you a cleaner list.
More on working division 01
A caveat that matters more in some divisions than others: a company may register up to four SIC codes, and the figures below count every position, not just the first. A business filed under two codes in this division appears under both. Treat the totals as reach rather than a headcount, and if you need a clean list, filter to companies whose FIRST code sits in the division. Every company you pull carries the Companies House record, the director's name, a verified website and a verified email, and the ones we cannot complete are not charged.

Division 01 questions
Should a farm register under mixed farming (01500) or a specific crop or livestock code?
Pick the code that matches most of your turnover. Choose 01500 mixed farming if you run arable and livestock together and neither one leads. A grower who focuses on cereals fits 01110 better. Companies House does not check what you pick. You can change it on your next confirmation statement if the business shifts.
Can an agricultural contractor also list a haulage or plant hire code?
Yes. A company can hold up to four SIC codes at once. They can come from completely different divisions. Many contractors add a transport or machinery rental code next to 01610 or 01629. That shows their second income stream. You declare codes at incorporation, or change them on the annual confirmation statement (form CS01). No approval step is involved.
